Law Week 2007: How much do you know about court procedures?

Date:
03/26/2007

The theme for Law Week 2007 is ‘Know the Score, Check out the Law’. At the Supreme Court of NSW, we would like to use this opportunity to focus on the Court’s procedures which after all is based on legislations, rules and regulations set out by NSW’s parliament. Procedures that will need to be followed if you ever have a matter listed before the Supreme Court.

And the Supreme Court of NSW has an extensive range of procedures. No surprise for an institution that has been in existence since 1824. These procedures may also change as new legislation comes into effect or existing laws are amended.

Over the years the Supreme Court of NSW has developed a number of information sheets to keep clients on top of the procedures issue and this number is constantly growing. All of these information sheets are available through the Supreme Court web site, albeit in a dispersed fashion.

For the first time, in conjunction with Law Week 2007, these information pages have been brought together into one location for easy and quick access. This gateway to the Supreme Court’s procedures contains information such as when fees are due for payment to what to expect if you have been directed to use mediation in your court matter.

This page also highlights the various procedures that have been outlined in the Court’s Practice Notes. Some examples include the procedures that should be followed to use technology in the courtrooms or the jury deliberation rooms, the protocol for online court, how to prepare proceedings for a hearing in the Professional Negligence List and how parties can gain access to copies of produced documents.

Please visit the newly revamped Fact Sheets page of the Supreme Court Web site to access this information.
