National Competition Policy Review of the Legal Profession Act 1987: Final Report The review, undertaken by the Attorney General’s Department, in consultation with a reference group, has a dual purpose. First, the review was required by the Competition Principles Agreement. Under the Agreement, Governments agree to consider any potentially anti-competitive restrictions in legislation and whether they are in the public interest. Second, a review of the 1993 reforms was required by a provision in the Legal Profession Act. An issues paper was released in August 1998 and was widely circulated. Advertisements were placed in newspapers, and the issues paper was posted on the Department’s website.
