ARWs - Frequently Asked Questions - Introduction
Who is an Authorised Report Writer (ARW)?
An Authorised Report Writer (ARW) is a qualified person who will write a report of any psychological or psychiatric injury you may have sustained as a result of the act of violence.
ARWs are clinical psychologists or psychiatrists who are required to provide an independent and objective report. The report they provide assists the compensation assessor in determining whether the compensable injury of Psychological or Psychiatric Disorder that you have claimed has been established.
When do I need a report from an ARW?
If you have claimed compensation for either Category 1: psychological or psychiatric disorder that is moderately disabling or Category 2: psychological or psychiatric disorder that is severely disabling, a report is required from an ARW.
Do I need an ARW report if I am claiming the compensable injuries of Sexual Assault or Domestic Violence?
No, you do not need an ARW report if you are claiming the compensable injuries of Sexual Assault or Domestic Violence. The Chairperson has issued a Guideline under section 65 of the Act which relates to these injuries. Select this link to read the Chairperson's Guideline.
Can I also receive an award for other physical injuries from the Schedule of Injuries?
Yes. If you are claiming Psychological or Psychiatric Disorder, and have sustained other physical injuries, you may also claim the relevant injuries listed in the Schedule of Injuries. You can write to us at any time before your claim is finalised to change, or add to any injuries you have claimed. Refer to the Guide to the Schedule of Injuries for more information.
Can I also receive an award for the injuries of Sexual Assault or Domestic Violence?
No. The injuries of Sexual Assault or Domestic Violence incorporate any physical and psychological injuries received as a result of the act of violence. Accordingly, if you were the victim of sexual assault or domestic violence, you may be eligible for either:
1. The injuries of Sexual Assault or Domestic Violence as relevant to the act of violence;
OR:
2. The injuries of Psychological or Psychiatric Disorder, and/or any physical injuries sustained;
but not both.
