ARWs - Frequently Asked Questions - Choosing an ARW

How do I choose an ARW?

A list of ARWs is available on our website, or we can send you a list. You may choose your ARW by writing, phoning or emailing us.

Do I need approval before seeing an ARW?

Yes, you will need our written approval before making an appointment to see an ARW. Once you have told us which ARW you want to see, we will check to see whether they are available. We will write to you with the ARW’s contact details and advise that you can go ahead make an appointment. We will also write to the ARW to tell them you have been approved to make an appointment.

What if I saw the ARW without prior approval?

If you saw the ARW without our prior approval then you may write to us explaining the circumstances. The compensation assessor will decide whether the report prepared can be considered an ARW report when your application for compensation is finalised.

Can I change my ARW?

If you have not seen the ARW and wish to change for any reason, you can send your request to us.

Can my counsellor write my ARW report?

No, an ARW is not permitted to have given you, or provide you with, treatment or counselling at any time.

This is because the counselling relationship is very different to that of the writer of a medico-legal report. Counselling is supportive and rehabilitative and it is not the role of the counsellor to question the presenting symptoms of a client.

You may provide the ARW with any material, notes, or reports from your counsellor, doctor or treating practitioner to show the course of any symptoms and treatment you have received. You may also give permission for the ARW to contact your counsellor or treating practitioner so that they may discuss the history of any counselling or treatment directly with them.

I have moved interstate. How do I organise an ARW?

There are some interstate ARWs listed on our website. If there is no ARW in your area, contact us and we will send you a letter telling you how you can organise an ARW in your area.

I have moved overseas. How do I organise an ARW?

Please contact us for advice. We will send you a letter telling you how you can organise an ARW overseas.
