ARWs - Frequently Asked Questions - The ARW Appointment
Who will make the appointment?
Once you have received the approval letter from us, you may contact the ARW to make the appointment.
How long should it take to get an appointment once I have approval?
The ARW is required to provide you with a suitable time for an appointment within two (2) months of you contacting them.
When should I make the appointment?
You may make the appointment at any time after you have received our approval letter for the ARW you have chosen.
However, professional bodies have advised that a diagnosis of chronic psychological or psychiatric disorder cannot generally be made until at least six (6) months has passed since the act of violence. The severity and duration of any psychological or psychiatric injury and the outcomes of any counselling or treatment that you may be receiving may become clearer in this time.
If you are experiencing any difficulties or negative psychological effects as a result of the act of violence, you may wish to apply for counselling through the Approved Counselling Scheme.
What should I bring to the appointment with the ARW?
It would help if you brought our approval letter, a copy of your police statement, and any other relevant documentation. If your injury has had an impact on your day-to-day activities, you should provide evidence to support this. For example:
- Reports from your school, TAFE or university may show a fall in grades, absences or withdrawal from study;
- A letter from your employer, or reports from a workplace rehabilitation provider might help to show how your work has been effected;
- Reports from your counsellor, doctor or treating practitioner may show the course of any symptoms and treatment you have received; and
- Statutory declarations from your family or friends can indicate what effects the act of violence may have had on your social life and close personal relationships.
You can also provide the names and contact details of people who would be willing to talk to the ARW and discuss the effects that the act of violence has had on your life.
What if I need an interpreter?
We can provide information about available interpreting services in NSW but you it is your responsibility to organise the interpreter to attend the ARW appointment. You can phone Translating and Interpreting Services on 131 450 for more information.
