Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody

In late 1996, the Attorney General’s Department was given primary responsibility for preparing the annual report of the NSW Government on the Implementation of the Recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

Since then, the Department has produced the reports for 1995/96, 1996/97and 1997/98. The 1997/98 report continues the format established for previous reports with information provided under the topics of ‘Preventing Deaths in Custody’, ‘Preventing Incarceration’ and ‘Addressing Underlying Issues’. Information is also provided against a number of individual recommendations.

The report is designed to enable Aboriginal peoples and the wider community to have access to information about the development, implementation and effectiveness of strategies and programs. It will also facilitate the informed participation of Aboriginal peoples and organisations in working with the NSW Government towards the achievement of common goals.

The future reporting and monitoring of the Government’s implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission will be conducted by the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council.

A copy of this report can be obtained from the Legislation and Policy Division. See Appendix 1 for contact details.
