Appendix 21 - Recycling Performance

The Department developed a Waste Management and Purchasing Plan last year to comply with a government policy initiative requiring agencies to adopt environmentally responsible waste reduction and purchasing practices.

The plan was approved by the Environment Protection Authority in May 1999. The plan includes various strategies to reduce the quantity of paper waste going to disposal, including:

• Encouraging a greater use of electronic communication, such as email, as a substitute to the generation of written material;
• Encouraging the use of waste paper recycling receptacles;
• Changing work practices to maximise the use of paper;
• Recycling waste paper wherever possible; and
• Achieving more effective separation of waste paper from other waste products.
