People with an Intellectual Disability
and the Criminal Justice System
It involves You.
We are asking You.
What?
In August 1992, people with an intellectual disability in NSW are being asked to give their general ideas and comments on:
- Contact with the police (getting help, reporting a crime, being asked questions)
- Going to court
- When people break the law.
We need:
- Your ideas about problems or difficulties you may have with any of these areas, and
- Your suggestions of what could improve these areas in the future for people with a disability.
Why?
The NSW Law Reform Commission is collecting this information. They hope it will be used to improve the way people with an intellectual disability are treated by the police, in prison, in court and by the law in the future. Your ideas are important.
About the discussions
We are setting up discussion groups to collect the views of people who want to have a say. These will be organised soon. People who attend the discussion will be given a paid taxi home and their time will be paid for at the two hour meeting. All information that people talk about at the discussion will be checked with you first before it is used for the report. If you are interested, your service provider could give you more information.
