General Information for Service Providers

The Families and Friends of Missing Person Unit (FFMPU) welcomes contact from service providers who are seeking:

    • Further information about FFMPU services.
    • To refer a family or friend of a missing person to FFMPU services.
    • Information and publications about missing persons’ issues.
    • Clinical advice or guidance about how to best support families and friends of missing persons.
    • Community education presentations about missing persons’ issues.

Below is a list of publications developed for service providers who may need additional guidance in responding to the support needs of families and friends of missing people.

Promoting Connectedness - Guidelines for Working with Families of Missing People (pdf 223Kb)
– guidelines for health care professionals to help GPs, psychologists and social workers provide better support and assistance to families and friends of missing persons.


Supporting Those who are Left Behind: A Counselling Framework to Support Families of Missing Persons (pdf 980Kb)
– Produced by National Missing Persons Coordination Centre (NMPCC), Australian Federal Police, this national counselling framework for health care professionals was developed following a Churchill Fellowship in 2006 that explored the international approach to unresolved loss. The framework is useful not only for service providers but for families and friends wanting to understand better the impact of, and therapeutic approaches to, ambiguous loss in the missing persons' sector. – an information sheet for health care professionals responding to families where a missing person has been located deceased.


Best Practice Principles for Counselling Families and Friends of Missing Persons (pdf 110Kb)
– an information sheet for counsellors about best practice principles when working with families and friends of missing persons.


Missing Persons Information for Mental Health Professionals (pdf 149Kb)
– an information sheet for mental health professionals jointly developed by FFMPU and the Mental Health Association NSW Inc. Provides information about missing persons and what to do if you think someone you have contact with may be a missing person.


Are you Working with a Young Person at Risk of Going Missing?
– a fact sheet developed by the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre (NMPCC) that provides information for service providers working with young persons at risk of going missing.
