  • Tips on resilience - information sheets
The Forum for families and friends of missing persons gave two families the opportunity to share the ways in which they have developed resilience whilst living with the loss of a missing person. The information provided by these two individuals have been developed into information sheets. One is from the perspective of the mother of a missing son and the other shares the experience of the father of a missing son.
  • Supporting those who are left behind
A national counselling framework for health care professionals.

When families and friends of a missing person reach out for support they are often faced with the ambiguity of counsellors and support workers who do not have the necessary skills to respond to their needs.

FFMPU coordinator, Sarah Wayland, during a secondment to the Australian Federal Police National Missing Persons Coordination Centre (NMPCC) in 2007/08 developed a practical and evidence based model of counselling to assist professionals in addressing ambiguity in the counselling space.

The framework, which includes a book, DVD and list of therapeutic prompts can be viewed online or ordered free of charge by contacting NMPCC on 1800 000 634 or missing@afp.gov.au.
  • Australian Institute of Criminology Missing Persons Research
In March 2008 the Hon. Mr Bob Debus, Minister for Home affairs, launched Missing Persons in Australia a research report co-funded by the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre, Australian Federal Police and the Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit, Attorney General's Department of NSW.
The report provided a 10 year update on the Australian experience of missing persons. The report highlighted that:

    - There are over 35000 reports made each year about the welfare of a missing person
    - 20000 relate to people under the age of 18 years
    - a significant proportion of reports suggest that there are concerns about the mental health of the missing person.
