Victims rights

New South Wales has a Charter of Victims Rights, which aims to protect and promote your rights if you are a victim of crime. The Charter is about how government departments should treat and assist you if you are a victim of crime.

The Charter says victims have a right to:

  • be treated with courtesy, compassion and respect
  • be told about and to access welfare, health and counselling services
  • privacy and protection
  • be told about legal processes within the criminal justice system.

Victims Services provides information about the Charter and areas relating to the victims rights.

If you think your rights are not being met, contact the service you are dealing with first. If the matter cannot be resolved, contact the Victims of Crime Bureau on ph: (02) 8688 5400 during business hours.
