Sexual Assault


What is sexual assault?


Sexual assault is a crime. If you have experienced it, there are many ways in which you can receive help.

Sexual assault occurs when a person is forced, coerced or tricked into sexual acts against their will or without their consent or if a child or young person under 18 is exposed to sexual activities. Sexual assault is also commonly known as sexual abuse, rape or indecent assault.

The NSW government maintains a public website specifically for victims of sexual assault. The site has information about: help and support available, making a report to police, the police investigation and the criminal justice process and how laws have changed to better meet the needs of vicitms of sexual assault. Reporting sexual assault to police


Reporting sexual assault and other crimes to police is important as it can aid your wellbeing and future safety - and that of your family and community.

Generally, no action will be taken to investigate the sexual assault without the permission of the victim.
