Child Abuse


Reporting Child Abuse and information

Counselling and crisis medical services

  • For Child abuse that includes sexual assault, NSW Health has a network of sexual assault services statewide. Sexual Assault Services provide free counselling, information and crisis medical services to victims of sexual assault and their families. Most centres see both adults and children.

Elder Abuse


General Information

  • The NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC) has produced a brochure, "Abuse of older people: The hidden problem". This brochure is available in English, Arabic, Croatian, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Macedonian, Maltese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukranian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Filipino. Copies of this brochure can be downloaded from the DADHC website.

Legal information

Assessment

  • The Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging have Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT), which are made up of doctors, nurses, social workers and other health professionals can provide advice or assess the situation. For further information on Aged Care Assessment Teams contact the Aged and Community Care Information Line on 1800 500 853 or the Department of Health and Ageing website for contact details of Aged Care Assessment Teams in your area.

Homicide (family, friends, witnesses)


If someone close to you has been murdered, or if you have witnessed a homicide, there are several options for information and support:

If the homicide occurred in New South Wales, you may be eligible for 20hrs free counselling under the Approved Counselling Scheme administered by Victims Services. For more information please goto Victims Services > Counselling or telephone the Victim Support Line.

You may wish to contact a grief counsellor at the NSW Institute of Forensic Medicine at Glebe (02) 8584 7800. The grief counsellor can provide you with support, counselling and information, including information about the coronial system.
