Guide to nominating an interstate Authorised Report Writer (ARW)

Victims of crime in NSW, who are claiming compensation for the injury of Psychological or Psychiatric Disorder Category 1 & 2 under the Victims Support & Rehabilitation Act 1996 are required to submit a report from an Authorised Report Writer.
Victims who have moved interstate are still required to see an ARW in their state or an approved equivalent professional.

ARWs Available Interstate
There are a small number of ARWs available in most states of Australia. The list of interstate ARWs can be found on the Victims Services website or you may phone for a copy of the list to be posted to you.

If you find a suitable ARW on the list please indicate this ARW on your application form or in writing to Victims Services and wait until approval is confirmed before you arrange an appointment.

Phone: (02) 8688 5511 or 1800 069 054 (toll free)
Address: Locked Bag 5118, Parramatta NSW 2124

Interim ARWs (Interstate)
If you cannot find an ARW in your state that you can access easily you may wish to find a professional with the appropriate qualifications who can apply for interim approval.

To be considered for interim ARW approval the professional must be either a clinical psychologist with post graduate qualifications (eg Masters in Clinical Psychology degree) or a psychiatrist.

If you want to locate someone to provide an interim ARW report please contact Victims Services for an Application Form for Interim ARWs (Interstate). You will then need to forward this form to your chosen clinical psychologist/psychiatrist to complete and return to the Director, Victims Services. If approval is granted you may then make your appointment for an ARW assessment.

Finding a Clinical Psychologist Interstate
The Psychologists Registration Boards in each state may be able to assist you find a clinical psychologist near where you live.

Some Registration Boards (eg Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia) have websites with search facilities to help you choose a suitable psychologist.

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) also has an online search facility.

Finding a Psychiatrist
Your local doctor or general practitioner may be able to recommend a suitable psychiatrist in your area. Alternatively, you could contact your local hospital or medical centre.

You could also search the Yellow Pages phone directory for psychiatrists in your area.
