Victims Services - About Us
Victims Services is part of the NSW Department of Attorney General and Justice. It helps victims of crime access services and entitlements to assist in their recovery and consists of the Victims Compensation Tribunal and the Policy and Service Delivery Section. Victims Services also provides support to the Victims Advisory Board.

Victims Compensation Tribunal
The Tribunal was established under the Victims Support and Rehabilitation Act 1996 and consists of:
- Magistrates (including the Chairperson) who determine appeals against determinations and make orders for the recovery of monies from convicted offenders
- Compensation Assessors who make determinations in compensation claims and approve counselling applications
- Tribunal staff who provide administrative support in the processing and determination of compensation and counselling claims, appeals and the restitution process.
Policy and Service Delivery Section
The Policy and Service Delivery Section of Victims Services provides a critical link between victims of crime and service providers throughout NSW.
Services provided include:
Victims Advisory Board
The Victims Advisory Board was established under the Victims Rights Act 1996 to consult community and government support agencies on issues and policies concerning victims of crime and advise the Attorney General, on policies and reforms relating to victims compensation and support services.
The Board consists of up to 12 members appointed by the Attorney General including:
- 6 members representing the general community,
- a member representing the police,
- a member representing the Department of Attorney General and Justice, and
- members representing other government agencies.
Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit
The Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit (FFMPU) was established in September 2000, under an amendment to the Victims Rights Act 1996, to co-ordinate support services to the families and friends of missing persons. The FFMPU works closely with both police and non-police tracing services.
Services provided by the Families and Friends of Missing Persons Unit include::
- a free and confidential counselling service
- an e-newsletter, FFMPU eNews.
- links to other agencies that may be able to assist in searching for a missing person
- development of the Someone is Missing website, in partnership with the Mental Health Association NSW inc, that focuses on the mental health needs of families and friends of missing persons.

Forums and Information Sessions
Victims Services organises and attends forums and information sessions for service providers throughout NSW.
