Crime Victims Services Unit (Department of Justice) website has information of victims of crime including:

  • Applying for financial assistance
  • Victims Registers

Witness Assistance Unit (formerly known as the Victim Support Unit) offers support to victims of crime, witnesses and their families, throughout the criminal justice process. The NT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions operates the Witness Assistance Unit Services and the services offered to victims include:
    • support
    • information
    • referral
    • interpreters
    • liaison
    • victim impact statements
Victims can contact the Witness Assistance Unit on (08) 8999 7533 (Darwin) or 1800 659 449 (freecall). You can also phone the Alice Springs office on (08) 8951 5800.

The Northern Territory Police website has a information for victims of crime including support, domestic violence and advice for victims dealing with the media.

The Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) is part of the Department of Health and Community Services with counsellors in Darwin, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek (Centacare provides a sexual assault counsellor in Katherine. You can call the Sexual Assault Referral Centre on 8922 7156 (24 hours).

Reporting child abuse: In the Northern Territory any person who believes that a child is being, or has been, abused or neglected is required by law to report their concerns. Reports should be made to the nearest Family and Children's Services office. Your nearest office can be contacted by using the freephone number 1800 700 250.

Legal Assistance

Law Society of the Northern Territory

Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission services include:

    • legal information by phone - 1800 019343 (tollfree);
    • legal advice - visit the NT Legal Aid website to find contact details of the office closest to you.
    • grants of aid.
    • Domestic Violence Legal service - phone 8999 3000
NT Community Legal Centres Community Legal Centres are independent community organisations providing free legal services
including advice and information. Most Centres provide face-to-face legal advice as well as information over the phone.
Many Centres hold daytime and evening interview and advice sessions.

NT Darwin Disability Advocacy Service can be contacted by phoning (08) 8941 3394.

Other Assistance

Victims of Crime NT (previously known as VOCAL) is a community organisation funded by the NT Government and staffed by volunteers. Victims of crime NT offers a number of services to assist victims of crime including:

    • referrals to counselling services
    • court support
    • assistance in preparing victim impact statements

Ruby-Gaea Darwin Centre Against Rape provides free counselling and support for women and children who have been sexually assaulted. Ruby-Gaea can be contacted on 89 450 155
