For the Private Sector

What privacy laws regulate the private sector?

Most private sector organisations come under the Federal Privacy Act, administered by the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner. If you are a large business (with an annual turnover of more than $3 million), you should directly contact their office with your privacy question.

As of 1 September 2004, all private health service providers of any size (eg. GPs, physios, hospitals), and any large organisations (annual turnover of more than $3 million) which handle health information, are also governed by the NSW Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002.
