Community Language Privacy Notice

About the the community language notice

If your organisation has a large number of clients who are from non-English speaking backgrounds, you may wish to provide them with a basic privacy notice in their own language. Use of the Community Language Privacy Notice can assist your agency to comply with NSW privacy laws.

In 2003 Privacy NSW developed a generic privacy notice which has been translated into the 23 most common NSW community languages: Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Croatian, Farsi, Filipino, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Macedonian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese.

What does the notice say?
community language privacy notice
Under Privacy laws, you have the right to find out why we are collecting this information, if it is compulsory and what we are going to do with it. You also have rights to access and correct any information held about you. To find out more, contact us on [BLANK – INSERT PHONE NUMBER OF YOUR AGENCY] and ask to speak to the Privacy Contact Officer. If you need an interpreter, call 131 450.

How and where can I use it?

Some possible uses for the notice could be:

  • on your website
  • on your standard forms
  • printed with your letterhead
  • on display on the counter or pinned onto the wall of any offices where you deal with members of the public on a daily basis.

How does it work?

The notice is designed to be as flexible as possible and requires minimum graphic design knowledge to use it. Nevertheless, the fonts used in non-Roman alphabets means that some languages are harder to work with than others. If you can, we suggest that you work with someone comfortable with graphics and image files when you work with these languages.

The translations are provided in various formats:
  • small type on two A4 pages of portrait orientation
  • larger type on five A4 pages of landscape orientation (created in 2006)
  • separate files so you can choose which ones to use.
If you wish to have greater flexibility in the way you use the community language notices and have a graphics department you can contact Privacy NSW to request the original uncompressed files in TIF format.
