How to make a complaint about a breach of your privacy

Not all privacy complaints can be dealt with by Privacy NSW. Sometimes the correct office for you to go to will be the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner.

Read the information below carefully to find out where and how to make a complaint about a breach of your privacy.

First you need to know who your complaint is against.

  • Is your complaint about a NSW public sector agency (eg. the RTA)?
  • Is your complaint about a local council?
  • Is your complaint about an Australian Government department (eg. Centrelink)?
  • Is your complaint about a private sector organisation (eg. a bank)?
  • Is your complaint about a private health service provider (eg. your GP)?
  • Is your complaint about an individual person (eg. your neighbour)?

(For definitions of these terms, see public sector agency, and private sector person or organisation.)
