English Language proficiency requirements - as from 1 July 2008
As part of the reforms agreed to by all Australian Admitting Authorities, as from 1 July 2008 all applicants for admission in NSW that do not meet exemption criteria will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency. Applicants will be required to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
IELTS exemption criteria
Any applicant for admission who has been awarded a law degree* from an Australian University or Institution, or the Board's Diploma in Law* will be exempt from the IELTS requirements for English Language Proficiency.
*Clarification: IELTS exemption is reliant on academic qualifications. The law degree referred to above is the law degree that an applicant relies on for admission in NSW. Completion of a Master of Laws at an Australian university without having been awarded a law degree would not satisfy an application for exemption. The diploma in law referred to above is the Legal Profession Admission Board's Diploma in Law. Please note that a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is not a Diploma in Law.
