Jury Service: Safety and Privacy

Security measures are in place within court complexes to ensure everyone's safety, including those called for jury service.

When you attend the court complex for jury service please make sure that you follow instructions given to you by a Sheriff's officer, court officer or security officer.

The following items may be considered dangerous and may need to be handed over to a security officer for safekeeping while you are at court:

  • tools such as screwdrivers, spanners and hammers
  • motorcycle helmets
  • aerosol cans other than hairspray or perfume
  • syringes without a medical authority
  • alcohol

The following items are not to be brought into the court complex and to do so may result in a person being arrested or fined:
  • firearms
  • knives
  • prohibited weapons
  • illegal drugs

More information can be found on our Protecting the Courts page.

If at any time you have concerns within the court complex please let a Sheriff's officer, court officer or security officer know immediately. If you are serving on a jury and at any time during court proceedings you have any concerns please immediately alert the court officer or Sheriff's officer assigned to the trial.

The Jury Act 1977 (NSW) restricts access to your personal information. At no time will your name and personal details be made public and you should not give your personal details to an unknown person. If in doubt, please ask the person for identification or advise a court officer or Sheriff’s officer.

Your privacy is also protected as an empanelled juror. Your name and address will only be used for administrative purposes such as payment of the jury fee. If you are an empanelled juror you are required to hand over your mobile phone, camera and/or other electronic equipment/recording devices at the start of each trial day. This is to ensure that no images or recordings that may compromise the identity of a fellow juror can occur.

As an empanelled juror you are not required to disclose your personal information to your fellow jurors unless you wish to.
