DUE TO THE RECENT CSO RESTRUCTURE, THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED.

The Criminal Law Practice Group advises and represents clients in courts, tribunals, inquests and inquiries. The Practice Group also offers the services of two solicitor advocates. Both are accredited specialists in advocacy and one is also an accredited specialist in criminal law. They regularly appear for clients in a variety of jurisdictions and provide highly specialised, cost effective advocacy services. Members of the group have a thorough grounding in mainstream criminal law but also offer expertise in various specialist areas.

The matters handled by the Criminal Law Practice Group include both advice and litigation in the following areas:

  • summary prosecutions of regulatory offences;
  • statutory interpretation of criminal legislation;
  • assisting the Coroner or representing interested parties at inquests;
  • prosecuting and defending applications for apprehended violence orders;
  • issues relating to sentencing, including sentencing guideline judgments and sentence administration;
  • matters relating to criminal procedure including search warrants;
  • matters relating to contempt of court including media contempt and non-compliance with court orders;
  • crown representation of police and public sector employees in criminal matters; and
  • assistance and representation at various inquiries including Royal Commissions.

The Criminal Law Practice Group also runs educational seminars for clients, publishes updates on Criminal Law issues and conducts client training.
