| 15 January | Expression of Interest: Aboriginal Gay, Lesbian, Sistergirl Community Awareness & Education Project
The NSW Attorney General’s Department’s Crime Prevention Division is currently seeking expressions of interest in conducting a project targeting Aboriginal Gay, Lesbian, Sistergirl (GLS) people.
Interest is sought from incorporated community organisations, academics or communication consultants with established working relationships and/or program links to Aboriginal and gay and lesbian communities in NSW. Partnerships and collaborative arrangements are encouraged.
Applicants must have: a demonstrated understanding of the project brief and its requirements; capacity to develop and sustain partnerships with all key stakeholders; experience working with Aboriginal communities; experience in carrying our similar projects; and capacity to develop and implement a community awareness and education package.
Interest must be expressed by a written proposal (no longer than 15 pages) that responds to the project brief – copies can be downloaded here or by contacting the Crime Prevention Division on 9228 8307.

| 21 September | 2006 Violence Against Women Prevention Awards
The NSW Strategy to Reduce Violence Against Women is calling for nominations to acknowldege individuals, groups, organisations, journalists and businesses that have made an outstanding contribution to the prevention of violence against women in NSW.
The VAW Prevention Awards will be announced on 24 November to launch the NSW 16 Days of Activism to Stop Violence Against Women.Nominations close on Friday 20 October 2006

| 14 August | Applications for Safer Community Compact (SCC) Grants are now invited from eligible Councils.
SCC grants are non-recurrent grants provided to support the implementation of strategies identified in crime prevention plans that are currently endorsed as a Safer Community Compact by the Attorney General. Currently, eligible Councils can apply for a SCC grant once each year during the period of the plan's endorsement. To be eligible, Councils must have either fully acquitted any previous grant; and, for those Councils that have a current SCC grant near expiration, Councils must demonstrate satisfactory compliance with the existing Funding and Performance Agreement. Applications must clearly demonstrate measurable crime prevention outcomes.
Please find attached a copy of the Application Form and Guidelines for your information. Applications for up to $50,000 must be received by C.O.B. Friday 15th September 2006.

| 16 May | The Centre for Rural Crime, Institute for Rural Futures is hosting a conference called "Crime in Rural Communities: The Impact, The Causes, The Prevention. The theme is crime and other risks to the safety and security of rural communities, with a particular focus on policing and crime prevention. | 15 May | The new Safer Community Compact grants have been announced. Safer Community Compact grants are grants available to local Councils in NSW that have a crime prevention plan endorsed by the NSW Attorney General as a Safer Community Compact. These grants support the implementation of crime prevention strategies. Currently eligible councils can apply for funding of up to $50,000 for up to three years. | 9 May | On 9 May 2006, the Premier, the Hon. Morris Iemma, MP announced the Government’s comprehensive strategy to reduce the incidence of graffiti on trains, public transport infrastructure and other community facilities. A major component of this strategy is the establishment of the Anti-Graffiti Action Team, which will play a key role in leading the development and implementation of:
- Increased use of Community Service Orders to make offenders repair the damage caused by graffiti vandalism
- Identification of graffiti “hot spots” and stepping up enforcement and surveillance
- Assistance to councils and government utilities with the development of Graffiti Management Plans targeting high graffiti environments
- A scheme for local councils to accredit community groups and volunteers to remove graffiti
The Government’s strategy in tackling graffiti will also include:
- $500,000 funding contribution from RailCorp to NSW Police to continue the work of Operation Chalk crackdown on graffiti vandals; and
- Introduction of legislation restricting the sale of spray paint
The Attorney General’s Department will lead the Anti-Graffiti Action Team, which will also include membership from the:

- Roads and Traffic Authority
- State Transit Authority of NSW
- Department of Local Government
- NSW Department of Education and Training

The PCYC Club hosted a special community launch event on Friday 23 September, with a live band and other activities for young people in the area. Maroubra PCYC was successful in its application to the NSW Crime Prevention Division to auspice the project which aims to divert young people from anti social behaviour through structured night recreational and development programs, and also by safely delivering young people to their homes. | September | Aboriginal Community Justice Groups are officially operational in 11 areas across the State. As of September, Co-ordinators have been appointed in Dubbo ,Toronto and Redfern/Waterloo, with Co-ordinators for the other 8 groups to be confirmed before the end of this year.
The Groups are located at Maclean/Yamba, Grafton, Lismore, Toronto, Mt Druitt, Lismore, Redfern/Waterloo, Nowra, Dubbo, Bourke and Brewarrina.

| September | To ensure young people have a voice in the community, the Wilcannia Youth Roundtable plans to establish a Youth Council to serve as an advisory body on local young people's issues. Such advice can assist crime prevention projects like the Division's Wilcannia Community Patrol and Safer Community Compact grants.
CPD representatives joined approximately 55 other attendees including young people, community members, government and non-government representatives at the Roundtable, where the 'Report of the Wilcannia Youth Roundtable' was presented.
