3. Is juvenile crime increasing?


Long TermThe recorded rate of juvenile offenders proceeded against by the NSW Police Force for violent offences has risen by more than 44% since 2001. Whilst the rate of juvenile offenders proceeded against for property offences has fallen by approximately 24% since 2001.
 
Short TermThe recorded number of juvenile offenders proceeded against by the NSW Police Force for violent and property offences was stable between January 2007 and December 2008.

Note: Proceeded against includes proceeded against to court by way of Court Attendance Notice or proceeded against other than to court by way of Youth Justice Conference, Caution Young Offenders Act, Cannabis Caution, Other Drug Caution, Criminal Infringement Notice, Infringement Notice or Warning.

Over the five years from January 2004 to December 2008 the number of juveniles aged 10 to 17 years proceeded against in some way by NSW Police fell for two major categories, rose for five and remained stable for the other nine categories. No trend test could be performed for one offence category as the numbers were too small.
