1. What offence(s) are going up?
Stealing from a motor vehicle

2. Where is it increasing most?
Commercial carparks in Sydney SD, Inner Sydney SSD, Central Western Sydney SSD

    3. What offences are going down
    Robbery with a weapon not a firearm, break and enter non-dwelling, motor vehicle theft
      4. What percentage of crime trends is stable or falling?
      95.1 per cent.

      5. What LGA has the most rising trends?
      Parkes and mid-western regional both have four

      6. What LGA has the most falling trends?
      Bourke and Bankstown both have five

      7. Is heroin coming back?
      There has been an increase in arrests for heroin use/possession over the last 24 months, especially in Sydney and especially in August and November last year. This is probably indicative of a growth in heroin use but examination of the long- term (five year) trend suggests a ‘bounce-back’ to normal levels, rather than the beginning of an upward trend.

      8. What is going up in harassment/threatening behaviour/private nuisance?
      Threatening behaviour, about half of which are domestic violence related. Other common threats involve allegedly unpaid bills

      9. What is the worst LGA for:
        • Assault DV (Bourke)
        • Assault non-DV (Sydney, then Walgett)
        • Sexual assault (Brewarrina)
        • Robbery w/o weapon (Sydney, then Auburn)
        • Break and enter dwelling (Moree Plains)
        • Motor vehicle theft (Bourke)
        • Stealing from an MV (Marrickville)
        • Stealing from a retail store (Sydney, then Burwood and Bourke)
        • Malicious damage to property (Bourke)

      10. What is the safest LGA?
      Ku-ring-gai (has 12 categories of crime that are less than half the State rate)

      11. What LGAs have the biggest increases in offensive conduct?
      Sydney, Newcastle, Sutherland, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Wollongong, Wyong and Byron Bay have all had big increases. A lot of the growth occurred in December last year when the police launched a Christmas blitz on drunken behaviour.

      12. Why are offences involving breach bail and fail to appear [in court] going up?
      In the wake of reforms to the Bail Act, police have been focussing very heavily on bail compliance, especially in Western Sydney

      13. Why are liquor offences up?
      Police stepped up enforcement activity against breaches of the Liquor Act, particularly in the last few months of last year (linked to the offensive conduct crackdown)

      14. Why are pornography offences going up?
      Police stepped up enforcement activity against child pornography offences in August and November last year

      15. What accounts for the anomaly between the ABS Crime and Safety estimate of the prevalence of assault and the police figures on assault between 2006 and 2007?
      Sampling variation. The ABS estimate of assault prevalence in 2006 was unusually low.
