Writing Competition 2008
The Board held a writing competition for school students entitled Say No to Discrimination as part of Law Week events for 2008.
This year students were asked to write about their experiences of discrimination, harassment and bullying and to describe a world without these problems.
The Board received over 600 entries in the competition. There were poems, acrostic poems, narratives, dialogues, songs, role plays and dissertations, as well as illustrations and musical compositions to enhance the messages in some cases.
The judges were very impressed by the quality of the entries and selecting the winners was a very difficult job. Many of the entries showed a great deal of creativity. There were great poets, story-tellers, rap artists and song writers amongst the entrants. But the winning entries stood out for their exceptional creativity and inspiration.
Winners were awarded in four categories: Kindergarten to Year 2; Years 3 to 6; Years 7 to 9 and Years 10 to 12. Five finalists were awarded in the K-2, 7-9 and 10-12 categories, with ten finalists in the 3-6 category because there were so many entries.
Attorney-General John Hatzistergos presented the winners with certificates and book vouchers for themselves and their schools at a ceremony at Parliament House on 2 May 2008. Finalists also received certificates.
