The Anti-Discrimination Board has a number of standard training sessions that can be tailored to suit the needs and focus of individual employers and service providers. These range from a two-hour awareness program for non-supervisory staff to one or two-day sessions for senior managers and supervisors. Our training sessions are highly interactive and use a range of scenarios, exercises and activities to stimulate interest and discussion.

What do we cover in our in-house training sessions?
We provide standard in-house training sessions as well as training tailored to your organisation anywhere in NSW, interstate and overseas.
Our standard sessions include:

The Board also runs special sessions for organisations on issues of current importance. At present these include:
- Recent legal development in key areas
- Working with disability
- Managing diversity in the workplace
Other sessions and conference presentations can be provided on specific topics as required, including sessions on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander discrimination issues. We conduct interactive sessions allowing time for questions and discussion. We use a variety of techniques including small group work, case studies and other-problem solving and group discussion activities. Who conducts the training?
The training is conducted by one of our Senior Workplace Relations Consultants, who have expertise in anti-discrimination law and its impact on workplace relations.
How many people can we train at a time?
Generally we can train groups of up to 15-20 people. In some cases we may recommend smaller groups.Standard sessions
Following is information about what is covered in our standard training sessions. Remember, we can tailor these to suit the individual needs and focus of each organisation.
EEO and harassment prevention for non-supervisory staff (two hours to half a day)
- Employees’ rights and responsibilities under the law and under the policies of your organisation
- What is and isn’t harassment and bullying
- The types of harassment
- What to do within the workplace if you are treated unfairly or harassed
- What will happen if you are accused of unfair treatment or harassment
EEO and harassment prevention for managers & supervisors (half day)
- What the law and your organisation’s policy say in relation to discrimination, harassment and equal employment opportunity, and how these affect your management decisions
- The role of a manager/supervisor in a practical sense, eg how to recruit staff and deal with staff you supervise
- What is harassment, why it happens, who does it and who is likely to be harassed
- Productivity issues, cost and legal/personnel consequences
How to handle grievances: for managers, supervisors and grievance handlers (up to one day, depending on the experience of course participants)
- Definition and principles of grievance handling, including confidentiality, impartiality, natural justice and recordkeeping
- The role of managers, supervisors and grievance handlers in handling grievances, that is, exactly how to deal with and investigate a grievance step by step
- Practical scenarios, skill activities and case study work
Contact Officer training: how to provide information and support (one day)
- For contact or support officers (those people who provide information and support as opposed to actually handling grievances)
- Definitions and information on equal employment opportunity, harassment and grievances, including issues such as confidentiality, impartiality, natural justice and record-keeping
- What your organisation’s grievance procedure says
- How to give information and support in line with your organisation’s grievance procedures and the law
- Practical scenarios, skills activities and case study work
Charges
- Up to 2 hours - $880 + GST
- Up to half day - $1,160 + GST
- Full day - $2,100 + GST
- Consultancy - $220 hour + GST
These charges include pre-session consultation, preparation time, resource material for each participant, checking your relevant policies and procedures to ensure they are in good working order, and support after training.
You may be charged for our travel and accommodation costs for sessions in a location outside Sydney, Wollongong or Newcastle. We will either charge you for travel and accommodation expenses, or ask you to pay these expenses directly to the travel or accommodation supplier.
