The Anti-Discrimination Board provides a range of training for the community sector. We provide training for community workers and other people who advise clients, consumers and members of the public about their rights and responsibilities under anti-discrimination law. Anti-discrimination rights, advice and strategies
This is a general course for community and advice workers. It enables participants to recognise when unfair treatment may be against the law and when it is not, and give accurate advice to clients, consumers or members of the community about their rights under anti-discrimination law.
It covers the following:
- the role of the Anti-Discrimination Board
- what our anti-discrimination laws say
- working out if unfair treatment is against anti-discrimination law
- what types of discrimination are against the law
- what areas of public life are covered by anti-discrimination law
- exceptions and exemptions from the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977
- how community workers can help someone who has been discriminated against
- lodging a complaint with the Anti-Discrimination Board
- contacting the Anti-Discrimination Board
This course is designed to address the specific needs of people working within the community sector and for those working in an advisory role. All participants are provided with high quality resources developed at the Anti-Discrimination Board.
Information sessions for community groups
The Anti-Discrimination Board's Community Education Officer is available to provide workshops and information sessions to community groups, schools and higher education, subject to staff availability. We can tailor the above course specifically for the members of the group involved, or provide a shorter talk, workshop or stall (perhaps within a broader conference, commmunity forum or inter-agency meeting).
Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team can also provide training and information that is specifically designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. More information...
Fees for community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training will vary according to the nature of your organisation and the costs involved in running the type of session you want. You may also need to provide your own interpreter as required.
To discuss your training needs please phone the Anti-Discrimination Board Office nearest you (Sydney, Wollongong or Newcastle). When contacting the Sydney office, please ask for the Community Education Officer on 9268 5518 or 1800 670 812. Community workers guidelines (booklet)
