Art Competition 2007

The Anti-Discrimination Board of NSW held an art competition for school students entitled Be a Mate, Don’t Discriminate as part of Law Week events for 2007. Issues of race were in the spotlight during the year, so the Board wanted to promote the importance and benefits of diversity and harmony as part of our Law Week contribution.

Students were asked to illustrate what their community would look like without discrimination. Over 250 entries were received, including many that were very creative and colourful. The winning entries stood out for their exceptional creativity, use of colour and technique.

Winners were awarded in three categories: Kindergarten to Year 2; Years 3-6 and Years 7-12. There were also 5 finalists in categories K-2 and 7-12, and 10 in category 3-6.

Board President Stepan Kerkyasharian presented the winners with certificates and book vouchers for themselves and their schools at a ceremony at Parliament House on 27 April 2007. Finalists also received certificates.

The presentation also featured a performance by students from TAP, the Talent Advancement Program, a community initiative of Bankstown City Council and the NSW Department of Education & Training. Thanks to TAP Musical Director Wendy Tierney, Sound Technician Ian Bertram and vocalists Kerry Sebio, Rachel Bertram, Anthony Colosi, Jodie Goodwin, Kane Luschwitz, Joel Newman and Lily Ngo.
