What you should know

Your legal matter may be a civil case or a criminal case. It may be dealt with by a court or a tribunal.

You can get a lawyer to act for you or you can represent yourself.

If you are representing yourself, you may feel a bit lost. There are many things to consider, including:

  • how to start or defend your case
  • how much it will cost
  • whether you need help from a lawyer, court staff or interpreters
  • whether you can settle your case without going to court
  • what you should wear in a court or tribunal
  • what to say in a court or tribunal
  • what you can do if you are not happy with the outcome of your case.
This section of LawAssist has some general information that may help you understand the legal process. For more information, see Frequently Asked Questions.

If you are defending yourself against a criminal charge, there is an online publication called Defend Yourself: Facing a charge in court which you might find useful.
