Fines
A fine is sometimes also called a:
- Penalty Notice
- Infringement Notice
- On the spot fine
- Ticket
- Criminal Infringement Notice (CIN).
You may be given a fine when you are caught breaking minor or less serious laws.
For more information, see Types of fines.
This topic only deals with fines that have been issued in New South Wales.
Have you got a fine?
If you receive a fine, you should consider:
- whether to ask for a review of the fine
- whether you can pay the fine in full or over time
- whether to choose (elect) to go to court to challenge the fine
- what will happen if you do nothing.
For more information, see Have you got a fine?
This section doesn’t deal with fines that have been given to you by a court. If you have already been fined by a court, see After Court.
Going to court
If you don’t believe you broke the law you may want to choose (elect) to challenge a fine in court. You can then plead "not guilty" and defend the case against you.
You may also elect to go to court if you want to explain that there is a good reason why you broke the law. You can then plead “guilty”, and ask the court for a smaller fine or no fine.
For more information, see Going to court.
After court
If the court dealt with your case, you may need to consider:
- how to pay any fine the court has given you
- whether you want to appeal the court’s decision
- how to have your case heard again if you missed court
- what effect the court’s decision may have on your driving or criminal record.
For more information, see After court.
Licence suspensions
Fines can have an effect on your driver's licence in many different ways. You should consider:
- what may happen to your licence if you don’t pay your fine or fines
- what will happen to your licence if you get too many demerit points
- what will happen to your licence if you are suspended by the police on the spot
- what you can do to try and get your licence back.
For more information, see Licence suspensions.
