Law Week is a week in March to inform the community about what we do and the services we offer. Staff are encouraged to participate by helping to organise activities, events, seminars, presentations or write articles about Departmental projects, programs or initiatives.
Law Week can be used as an opportunity to promote a greater understanding of the Department's programs and initiatives to the community.
The Law Society of NSW manages the official National Law Week website to promote Law Week to the public.

Name of Event: Privacy and You – a seminar on the law in NSW relating the protection of an individual’s privacy

Description of Event: Professor Michael Tilbury, Commissioner in charge of the NSW Law Reform Commission’s review of privacy laws, will outline the scope of the privacy review. Attendees are invited to ask questions and raise issues about this law reform topic. All interested members of the general public and the legal profession are invited to attend.
The privacy review resulted from a request by the Attorney General for the Commission to inquire into and report on whether existing legislation in New South Wales provides an effective framework for the protection of the privacy of an individual. In particular, the Commission is to consider the desirability of: privacy protection principles being uniform across Australia; a consistent legislative approach to privacy under various NSW statutes; introducing a statutory tort of privacy in NSW.

Description of Event: Develop a deeper understanding about how you can make your voice heard in process of legal policy and law making in New South Wales.
Policy experts from the Attorney General’s Department of NSW will guide you through the bureaucratic, legal and parliamentary aspects of law and policy making, and explain what works and what doesn’t when writing submissions to government.
The seminar aims to give attendees:
a better understanding of the practicalities of the law making and legal policy process strategies for participating in government decisions, including tips on how to maximise the effectiveness of submissions and hints on how to influence the way justice services are delivered to particular communities answers to your questions about the legal and parliamentary maze.
Lawyers can claim CLE/CPD points for attending this free seminar.
Speakers:
Maureen Tangney - Maureen is Director of the Policy Division at the Attorney General’s Department of NSW. Maureen supervises reforms to civil law and policy issues within the Attorney General’s portfolio. She has also worked for the Commonwealth public service.
David Mitchell - David has worked at Legislation & Policy since 2002. He has worked on a wide range of legislative reforms including the referral of power to the Commonwealth in relation to de facto relationship financial matters, the introduction of an expanded workplace surveillance regime and reforms to legislation governing the classification of films and computer games. He has also provided secretariat support to the Standing Committee of Attorneys General.
Nicole Lawless - Nicole is the Senior Policy Officer in Criminal Law Review. She is on secondment from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where she is a Prosecutor.
Monika Ciolek - Monika is a Policy Officer with Legislation & Policy. She is a member of working party implementing the Law Reform Commissions' Report on Uniform Evidence Law. She has also provided secretariat support to the Standing Committee of Attorneys General.

The Aboriginal Women's Legal Resource Centre in partnership with the Attorney General's Department and the Killara Refuge will be presenting Legal Rights Games as part of Law Week 2007. The games will be presented separately to both Women's Groups and Youth Groups at the La Perouse Primary School All Purpose Room on the 30th March 2007 between 10.30am and 2pm. The interactive games are designed to educate people about their legal rights. Free legal advice will be available after the games. It’s all in the spirit of fun and education.
