Getting Help for your Family Law Problem: Legal Services and Mediation Services
Legal Services

Legal Aid
Grants of legal aid (for representation) are restricted in
property settlement cases. You can get free family law advice on a wide range of matters, including property settlements, from all legal aid offices in New South Wales. Interviews are by appointment only, except in the case of our head office in Sydney which provides family law advice Monday to Friday from 9-4pm without an appointment. Our head office is located at 323 Castlereagh St (corner of Hay St) Haymarket.

If your matter is urgent, you do not live near a Legal Aid office or you are unable to visit one, you can call our Legal Aid HelpLine toll free on 1800 806 913 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday). The HelpLine can also refer you to other services and provide information about Legal Aid policies and guidelines.

Community Legal Centres
You can get free legal advice from your nearest
community legal centre. Call the Legal Aid HelpLine for information about your nearest community legal centre.

Private Solicitors
The best way to get detailed legal advice tailored to your situation, is to see a lawyer. The
Law Society of NSW can give you the names of private lawyers in your area. It can also provide the names of lawyers who are accredited specialists in family law.
NSW Law Society Community Assistance Service: 9373 7300 or 1800 357 300 (country callers only) for information about private solicitors in your area.
NSW Law Society Specialist Accreditation Hotline: 1800 422 713 for details about accredited family law specialist solicitors in NSW.

Mediation Services
If you can't agree then you should look at your choices. Perhaps someone else can speak to you and help you both to reach an agreement. One way that is often very successful is mediation. A mediator listens to both your suggestions about how you think the disagreement should be resolved. The mediator will then make recommendations to you both to try and help you reach an agreement.
