New legal service in Hornsby: 14 May 01

Translations launch in Fairfield: Law Week, 13-19 May 01

Rural communities learn about their legal rights: 6 Feb 01
Working Out West is a joint project between Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women's Legal Centre, Legal Aid NSW, the NSW Attorney General's Department, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, the Women's Legal Resource Centre and Sydney law firm Blake Dawson Waldron. Workshops to be held in Bourke and Walgett over the next 12 months will cover discrimination, consumer issues, family violence, police powers, how the law works and getting the most out of government.

Legal Aid advises rain victims: 20 Aug 98
Legal Aid, through its Civil Law Centre in Wollongong, will provide free advice to victims of this week's heavy rains who may experience difficulties with insurance claims. "Many of those who suffered loss this week are confused by the complexities of claiming on their policies. We do not wish people to be further traumatised or frustrated with insurance problems", says Wollongong Legal Aid lawyer, Michael Sergent.

People seeking advice will be able to drop in to Legal Aid on Monday 24 August 1998 from 10am to 5pm. The office is on the ground floor, Graovac House, 73 Church St Wollongong. Lawyers will work into the night and on other days if the demand exists.

"Additional to our Wollongong civil lawyers we have arranged for two expert insurance lawyers from Sydney to assist us on Monday", added Mr Sergent.

People are requested to bring their insurance policies.

Defendants guide launched: 15 May 98
Going to Court: A Handy Guide to the Local Court for Defendants is a plain English publication for people appearing as defendants in local courts, was launched today (Monday 11 May) by the NSW Attorney General Jeff Shaw.
The guide provides practical advice to people who have been charged or summonsed for a criminal offence and have to go to a NSW Local Court. It has been jointly produced by the NSW Legal Aid Commission and the NSW Attorney General’s Department.

Legal Aid on local radio in Law Week: 11 May 98
Legal aid lawyers will be speaking on local radio stations around NSW as part of a special Law Week campaign to help inform people in regional areas about the law and their legal rights.
The aim of Law Week, which begins this year on Monday 11 May, is to improve the community's access to justice by promoting a better understanding of the law and the legal system. The NSW Legal Aid Commission is contributing to Law Week by focusing on the needs of people in regional areas.
