The Prisoners Legal Service is a specialist service of the NSW Legal Aid Commission. The service is free and confidential.

How Can We Help?

We can represent you at:
  • Parole Board hearings
  • life sentence determinations
  • segregation appeals
  • visiting justice hearings


    We also visit and give free advice and minor assistance in matters like:
  • bail
  • legal aid
  • appeals
  • classification and other prison issues
  • other legal problems

    We can also put you in contact with Legal Aid, who can represent you at your trial, appeal or bail application.

    Ring the Prisoners Legal Service on (02) 9219 5888(reverse charges) or via the Legal Aid HelpLine (toll free) 1800 806 913. Calls to the Prisoners Legal Service count as a legal phone call.

    How Do You Contact Us?

    Every gaol in NSW keeps a Prisoners Legal Service appointments in a "Legal Aid book". Ask your wing officer or welfare officer to put your name in this book.

    Our lawyers visit:

    Weekly: Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre, Long Bay, Silverwater and Mulawa

    Fortnightly: Parklea, Windsor, Special Purpose Prison and Malabar Prison Hospital

    Monthly: Emu Plains
    Most country gaols are visited at least monthly
