Who gives advice?
The Legal Aid Commission of NSW provides free legal advice to anyone on most matters. If you then have to go to the Local Court, a duty lawyer will represent you if you are eligible for legal aid. To contact Legal Aid, ring your nearest office to make an appointment or call the Legal Aid HelpLine on 1800 806 913 (free call) for further information. Chamber Magistrates are located at most Local Courts. They can give you free information about how the court operates. Chamber Magistrates cannot represent you in court. Ring your nearest Local Court to find out when you can see the Chamber Magistrate. Private Lawyers: If you wish to have a private lawyer represent you in a criminal matter in the Local Court, you can contact the Law Society of NSW on (02) 9373 7300 or 1800 357 300 (country callers only) to obtain the names of private lawyers nearest to you. Fees for private lawyers vary, so make sure that you understand the likely costs involved at the first interview. The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) can help if you are Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander. Ring your nearest ALS office for more information.
