Awards go to outstanding lawyers

This year the Law Society of NSW Excellence Award in Government Legal Service has been shared by two people from Legal Aid and a team from the NSW Police Service.

The individual winners are Richard Funston (Children's Legal Service) and Deborah de Fina (Family Law).

The award was presented by the Attorney General, Bob Debus at the Government Lawyers' Annual Dinner at NSW Parliament House.

Deborah was nominated for her work in the restructure of the NSW Children's Court required by the new care and protection legislation, and for her input into Legal Aid's response to that legislation.

Richard was nominated for his work in expanding and improving criminal law legal services to children across NSW. His involvement in new initiatives such as the Juvenile Justice Visiting Legal Service and the Under 18s HotLine was recognised, along with his extensive involvement in external committees and agencies.

In accepting his award, Richard acknowledged the team support that was the backbone of the Children's Legal Service.

"Any one person is only as good as the team around them. I proudly accept this award on behalf of the dedicated and hard-working administrative and legal team that makes up the Children's Legal Service at Legal Aid. I also want to single out two other people who continue to make a difference to juvenile justice in NSW–they are Bill Grant (Deputy Director-General, NSW Attorney General's Department and Jenny Bargin (Director, Youth Justice Conferencing, Department of Juvenile Justice). If you place the standards Jenny and Bill set as your benchmark, how can you go wrong!"

Debora de Fina: expert in care and protection. Richard Funston: recognised for many
achievements including initiatives like our
