Why is field searching useful?
A unique feature offered by CaseLaw NSW, not available on any other Internet judgement service in Australia, is metadata based searching.
As many Internet users will know, most search engines will search the whole text of a document for the selected terms. CaseLaw NSW is the only judicial decisions service to offer you a facility to search on metadata fields.
When decisions are created, the Court incorporates information into certain metadata fields. For example, in the 'Legislation Cited' field, the Court will list all the primary legislation that was considered in making the decision.
If you are looking for decisions that considered the meaning of the 'Crimes Act', for example, you can use the 'Advanced Search' on CaseLaw NSW to search the 'Legislation Cited' field. This will restrict CaseLaw NSW to searching only on the 'Legislation Cited' field. Instead of getting all the decisions that mention the words 'Crimes Act', 'Crimes' and 'Act' (as would happen if you used a full text search), CaseLaw NSW will only return decisions where the 'Crimes Act' was considered in the decision. This will make your searching easier and make it more likely that you will get the decisions you are looking for.
