Working for Us

The Department of Justice and Attorney General is committed to providing a safe, flexible work environment where the contribution of all staff is valued. We have established ethics, equity and access programs to encourage the development of every individual, and involve our staff in the planning and delivery of the Department’s services. Working for us offers:

Equal Employment Opportunity

Our Equal Employment Opportunity program is designed to provide equal access to jobs, benefits and services for all current and prospective staff. As an Equal Opportunity employer, our goal is to establish a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community we serve.

Our EEO Summary is contained in the Department's Annual Report and it provides an overview of the Department’s EEO statistics and achievements.

Flexible Work Practices

The Department aims to foster a flexible, responsive and productive working environment. Flexible work practices offer opportunities for the Department to improve its performance and productivity and for staff to balance their work, family and community service responsibilities.

Flexibility benefits everyone

A flexible work environment results in increased staff morale and decreased stress levels. There are also considerable cost benefits through retention of skilled staff, reduction in recruitment and training costs, and decreased absenteeism.

Options available

Whilst a range of flexible work options are available, the main options utilised by staff include part-time work, job sharing and working from home.

Policies and guidelines

To assist in the implementation of flexible work practices, we have developed policies on working from home, utilising family and community service leave and carers leave. Our Part Time Work policy is being revised, and further policies will be developed in accordance with our commitment to continuous improvement.

Support for parents

Support for staff with children is provided through the Department’s Legal Eagles Vacation Care Program and Regional Vacation Care Subsidy Scheme. The Legal Eagles Vacation Care Program, which operates during most school holiday periods, offers subsidised care for the children of staff in the metropolitan Sydney region. The Regional Vacation Care Subsidy Scheme provides part reimbursement of the expenses incurred by staff who utilise approved vacation care programs in regional and rural New South Wales.

At the forefront in flexible work practices

The Department of Justice and Attorney General has also prepared a research report into flexible work practices within the Department in conjunction with the Office of the Director of Equal Opportunity in Public Employment (ODEOPE). The report, Advancing Flexibility, is designed to share examples of good practice and ways of improving implementation of flexible work practices. It provides information about strategies that have resulted in the effective use of flexible work practices in the NSW Attorney General's Department.

Training and Career Development

We encourage the ongoing development of our staff and management through participation in a wide variety of training and career development opportunities.

The Department strongly encourages participation in its internal training programs. These cover workplace information, client services, information technology, supervision and management. Attendance is also encourged in training programs of other government agencies and sector wide development opportunities.

Women's programs

The Department's Spokeswomen’s Programme is a career development initiative aimed at developing the knowledge and skills of women working in the public sector. The Department’s revised Spokeswomen’s Programme was launched in May 1997.

Other initiatives for women employees include the Mentoring Program and the Developing Women for Management Program

Scholarships

Each year, the Premier’s Department offers scholarships for public sector staff to undertake the Public Sector Management Course. The Public Sector Management Course leads to the attainment of a university accredited Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management. The Director General offers additional Public Sector Management Course scholarships for Justice and Attorney General’s staff.

Migrant work experience

The Department also participated in a pilot Migrant Work Experience Program coordinated by the Office of the Director of Equal Employment Opportunity in Public Employment. This program was designed to afford staff members with overseas gained qualifications the opportunity to gain work experience using those qualifications.

Equity and Diversity

We aim to achieve excellence in the delivery of quality client service. Our Ethnic Affairs Policies and Programs and Disability Strategic Plan are designed to ensure equal access to our information and services for the whole of the community.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy was developed to provide support and career development opportunities for current and prospective Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff. The Department's Norimbah Unit supports and nurtures the career development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and is responsible for informing them of issues impacting the Department.

We have a number of equity networks within the department including the Multicultural Network, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Network, the Spokeswomen's Network, and the Disability Network.
