Promoting Human Rights

The Department of Attorney General and Justice plays an integral role in promoting and protecting the rights and dignity of all people in New South Wales.
The right to live free from discrimination is an internationally recognised human right. The United Nations’ International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination all promote the elimination of discrimination. Australia, as a signatory to these and other international conventions, is committed to ending discrimination.

Australia’s largest State, New South Wales reflects a broad diversity of cultures, abilities and perspective. It is the home to a large number of Australia’s indigenous communities and is one of the most ethnically diverse societies in the world. It also plays host to one of the world’s largest annual celebrations of gay and lesbian life, and in the Year 2000 New South Wales’ and Australia’s para-olympians competed against the world’s finest.

Although all Australians have individual rights, those rights carry the responsibility to respect the rights of others, including the right to a dignified and peaceful existence regardless of one's race, age, sex, marital status, transgender status, disability or sexual orientation.

The Department of Attorney General and Justice is responsible for a range of specialist human rights and related agencies which work towards enhancing our respect for, and the protection of, the rights and dignity of all people. These agencies also advance the special needs of some members of the community who have historically been disadvantaged in accessing services and facilities.
